In anxious expectation, the aged Sisygambis, Dario's mother, begs for mercy for herself and the harem. However, it turns out that she did not throw herself at the feet of the Macedonian ruler Alexander, but rather Hephaiston, his friend. Alexander solves this situation without becoming violent towards the women.
