The light effects of the painting are reminiscent of Master Ruisdael; as in many of his paintings, there is a shaded landscape that brings the trees and the shore closer to the viewer. The sunset light illuminates only the clouds and the calm body of water to the left. The evening calm that radiates from the picture is also reflected in the figures, there are fishermen on the shore, on the left a wagon with hay driving home and on the right a farmer's wife busy at the fields, next to a dovecote where only one bird can be seen.
