Figure painter, illustrator. He belonged to the artists known as the "generation of the National Theatre", he was one of the most popular artists of the 80s and 90s of the 18th century. He was the brother of Karl Liebscher. He studied Realschule in Prague, after which he attended a three-year course for drawing teachers in Vienna. He drew attention to himself by participating in a competition to decorate the foyer of the National Theatre, in which he received second prize and his lunettes were placed in the corridor, where he created eight lunette allegories of dramatic arts. He then spent several months in Italy and from 1879 he was a drawing teacher at the Prague technical school. He created decorative paintings and historical compositions, he was interested in folklore painting. His drawings were often published in popular magazines of the time, such as Světozor or Zlatá Praha. His illustrations appeared in many albums, poetry collections and novels. He based his work on careful study and expressed himself with effective, dramatically vivid drawing. |

O autorovi
Adolf Liebscher, narozený 11. března 1857 v Praze, byl významný český malíř-figuralista, představitel generace Národního divadla a jeden z nejpopulárnějších umělců období 80. a 90. let 19. století. Byl také bratrem malíře Karla Liebschera a otcem architekta a malíře Adolfa Liebschera mladšího.
Adolf Liebscher se narodil v Praze na Novém Městě jako nejmladší ze čtyř synů c. a k. stavebního inženýra Josefa Liebschera a jeho ženy Marie Fischerové. Rodina se přestěhovala na Staré Město po asanaci do novostavby domu V Kolkovně č. 3, který dodnes zdobí jeho malby. Studoval českou reálku v Praze a následně absolvoval tříletý kurz pro učitele kreslení na Uměleckoprůmyslové škole ve Vídni.
Adolf Liebscher se proslavil účastí v soutěži na výzdobu foyeru Národního divadla, kde získal druhou cenu. Jeho lunety s názvy jako Melodrama, Operetta, Fraška, Epos, Veselohra, Ballet, Opera a Drama byly umístěny na chodbě divadla. Po několika měsících strávených v Itálii začal v roce 1881 učit kreslení na pražské technice.
V roce 1882 se oženil s Aloisií Barochovou, s níž měl syna Adolfa mladšího, který následoval otcovy kroky a věnoval se malování. Adolf Liebscher zanechal významnou stopu v českém umění svou schopností zachycovat figury a scény s emocionálním nádechem.
Zemřel 11. června 1919 v Potštejně.
