Founded in 1897, Dalwhinnie is a Scottish Highlands distillery situated in one of the UK's coldest areas, averaging 6 degrees celsius. Designed by Charles Doig, its strategic location facilitated whiskey production. The cold climate and heavier, sulphurous distillate necessitate longer maturation. Dalwhinnie is not only known for its single malt but also as a key component in Johnnie Walker blends, adding honey-fruit notes and light smoke. It was included in Diageo's Classic Malts series in 1988, with notable bottlings including the 15-year-old and Distillers Edition.
Dalwhinnie 1988 is a single malt whisky bottled as part of The Distillers Edition vintage series. This series is known for whiskies that are first matured in traditional oak casks before being moved to secondary aging in other casks, showcasing a different character of the distillery than what is normally presented. In this case, the whisky was matured in Oloroso Sherry casks.
Nose: Rich notes of honey, dried fruit, and nuts, accompanied by a subtle hint of smoke.
Taste: Sweet and smooth with notes of honey, spice, and dried fruit from the Oloroso cask, adding depth and complexity.
Finish: Medium-long, with hints of honey, sherry, and fine smoke.
Bottles from The Distillers Edition series are sought after by whisky collectors today, thanks to vintage releases.
