Glengoyne is a picturesque Scottish distillery located on the border of the Highlands and Lowlands regions. It was founded in 1833 by the Edmonstone family under the original name of Burnfoot. In 1876, the Glasgow company Lang Bros. took control of the distillery, first renaming it Glen Guin and in 1905 Glengoyne.
The distillation process at Glengoyne is significantly slower than other Scottish distilleries, which contributes to a fine, to the sweet and fruity character of the distillate. It is dominated by notes of apples, pears and bananas, giving the whiskey its characteristic lightness and smoothness.
A unique feature of the distillery is the fact that the distillation takes place in the Highlands region, while the warehouses where the whiskey matures are located across the road in the Lowlands region. This geographical feature is often highlighted in the brand's marketing.
In 2003 the distillery was sold to Ian MacLeod, who focused on developing the Glengoyne brand as a premium single malt whiskey and turning it into a tourist destination. Today, more than 50,000 visitors visit the distillery annually.
Glengoyne Aged 20 Years "Peter's Choice" is a single malt whisky, distilled on 14 April 1986 and bottled in August 2006 as a limited edition, personally selected by Mashman Peter Andrew. The whisky was matured in a Pedro Ximénez (PX) sherry cask, cask no. 433, and has not been chill-filtered or colored, retaining its full character.
Nose: Sweet and rich, with hints of chocolate, almonds, licorice, and stewed fruit.
Taste: Intense, with layers of sweet dried fruit, chocolate, and warm spices.
Finish: Long and balanced, with lingering sweetness and complexity imparted by the sherry cask.
The auctioned bottle has no. 100/603 and is delivered in a luxurious wooden box.
