Glenturret is a Scottish distillery located in the Highlands that dates back to 1775 when the site was home to an illegal whiskey production known as The Hosh. However, the distillery was not officially licensed until 1818, when John Drummond began legal whiskey production.
The distillery survived many challenges, including being dismantled during the 1920s when it faced difficult economic conditions. However, it was revived in 1960 by James Fairlie, who bought the equipment from Tullibardine and re-established the distillery. At the same time, the company focused on tourism and became one of the first distilleries in Scotland to open a visitor centre. In 2002, the visitor center was converted into The Famous Grouse Experience, making the distillery the center for the promotion of this blended whiskey until 2018 when it was sold to Glenturret Holding.
Bottles of Glenturret single malt whiskey were rare, although in 2015, three different versions were attempted. In 2020, under the leadership of former colleagues from the Macallan distillery - Bob Dalgarn (master blender) and Ken Grier (strategic consultant), a rebranding took place and new official bottlings are appearing on the market.
Glenturret 1985 is a single malt whisky, distilled on 12 July 1985 and bottled on 19 September 2006 by independent bottler Signatory Vintage as part of the Cask Strength Collection series. This series is known for bottling whisky directly from the cask at full cask strength, without added coloring, preserving its authentic and intense character. The whisky matured for 21 years in a hogshead cask (No. 134).
Nose: Intense and unconventional, with a combination of sweet, fruity, and slightly acidic notes. Notes of vanilla intermingle with yogurt and waxy apricots, along with subtle earthy hints.
Taste: Complex with bitter and fruity notes, featuring waxy apricots, bitter almonds, and a subtle vanilla undertone.
Finish: Medium-long and dry, with lingering fruity notes.
The auctioned bottle is no. 120/294.
