Caperdonich was a Scottish distillery in Rothes, Speyside, originally established in 1898 as Glen Grant No. 2. It was originally intended to produce a whiskey similar to its sister distillery Glen Grant, but ended up with a different character, with notes of softer pears, creaminess and fresh mint. The distillery closed in 1902, reopened in 1965 and expanded in 1967. It produced both a lighter fruit still and later a smoked still.
After closing in 2002, its equipment was sold - two stills were transferred to the Belgian Owl distillery, while the other parts ended up in the new Falkirk distillery. The distillery was demolished in 2011, but today it still has a loyal following among collectors and whiskey lovers who consider it a hidden Speyside treasure.
Caperdonich 1968 is a single malt whisky, distilled in 1968 and bottled in 2003 as part of the Mission - Selection Number Two series by independent bottler Murray McDavid. This series focuses on bottling rare and vintage whiskies, with each bottling unchill-filtered and free from added coloring, representing the authentic and unique character of the distillery.
The bottle is adorned with the signature of the legendary Jim McEwan, who was instrumental in the restoration and reopening of the Bruichladdich distillery in 2001, where he served as master distiller until 2015. His signature appears only on exceptional bottlings, prized among whisky connoisseurs and collectors.
Nose: Dominated by floral notes such as cherry and apple blossoms, with a hint of citrus freshness and a subtle touch of wood.
Taste: Sweet and mildly lemony, with a light and refreshing taste that combines with woody undertones. An unusual hint of cheese lingers, giving this whisky a unique character.
Finish: Short, fresh, and clean, ending with light spicy and peppery notes.
The auctioned bottle has a number 46/600 and is delivered in a luxurious wooden box. This whisky represents one of the older Caperdonich expressions, sought after by collectors and whisky connoisseurs for its unique flavor profile and rarity.
