Auchentoshan is a Scottish distillery located near Glasgow in the Lowlands. Founded in 1823, its location near the urban agglomeration and the River Clyde facilitates distribution. The name 'Auchentoshan' comes from the Gaelic language and means 'corner of the field', referring to the proximity of the Kilpatrick Hills.
The distillery is known for its triple distillation technique, which is unusual for Scottish distilleries, the vast majority of distilleries use double distillation . This method gives the distillate a finer and lighter character, typical of the Lowlands region. Auchentoshan is therefore often recommended as an ideal entry point for those exploring the world of Scotch still.
Auchentoshan today belongs to the Beam Suntory portfolio and still uses its traditional triple distillation, making it one of Scotland's unique distilleries.
Auchentoshan Aged 21 Years is a single malt whisky that has matured in second fill sherry casks. As the casks have already been used once, the sherry influence is no longer very dominant, leaving more room for the soft and fresh notes of the distillate itself.
Nose: Sweet notes of dried fruit, honey, and fine sherry with a light hint of citrus and spice.
Taste: Smooth, with notes of caramel, vanilla, nuts, and dried fruit, creating a complex and harmonious taste.
Finish: Medium length, balanced with lingering notes of sherry, light woodiness, and sweet spicy elements.
This whisky is a popular choice for lovers of sophisticated and lighter whiskies that do not lose their complexity.
