Popis
Japonsko, 1885 This incredible woodblock print was designed by the artist Yōshū Chikanobu (1838–1912). It belongs to his rarely seen 1885 series "A Chronicle of the Rise and Fall of the Minamoto and Taira" (Genpei Seisuiki), which depicts famous samurai and events from the bitter Genpei War (1180–1185). The war ended with the fall of the Taira and the establishment of the Kamakura Shogunate. The scene illustrates a fantastic samurai legend where the ghosts of Taira Tomomori and his fallen warriors rise up out of the sea to attack Minamoto no Yoshitsune's ship as he crosses Daimotsu Bay. Emerging from the raging water, the ghastly, blue-faced spirits are led by Tomomori gripping a spear with an evil grimace. On the front of the Minamoto ship, the warrior monk Benkei clasps his hands in prayer seeking to vanquish the ghosts, while Yoshitsune leans over the side with his sword extended. The slanting raindrops in this design are rendered with deluxe burnished lines.
