Eugenio de Blaas (Eugen von Blaas) was born in Albano near Rome, the son of Tyrolean painter Carl von Blaas and Agnesina Auda, an Italian woman. His father became a professor at the Academy in Venice in 1856, where Eugenio de Blaas also studied. In Venice, Eugenio de Blaas established himself as a leading painter of genre paintings, which mainly featured young, beautiful women. From 1884 to 1890, Eugenio des Blaas was an honorary professor at the Academy in Venice. The girl in a white dress sits facing right on a chair covered with a red, patterned velvet cloth. She turns her head and looks at the viewer in a friendly manner. Her brown hair is cut into a short fringe above her forehead. The girl wears a wide, light blue silk sash around her waist. She holds a white rose and a bouquet of lilacs in her lap. The painter masterfully evokes the lace and ruffles of the white dress and plays with the colors of the lilacs and roses.
