Oil on canvas, 74.5×104 cm (96.5×128 cm). Signed and dated lower left "Hugo Ullik 1872" (the stated dimensions correspond to the artist’s large gallery formats, comparable works "View of Trosky"; "View of Střekov").
A classic Romantic veduta of Karlštejn Castle viewed from the northwest. The foreground captures wild nature with boulders and mature trees framing the view of the castle complex towering on its rocky spur. The painting excels in Ullik’s typical sense of detail and atmospheric rendering of the landscape.
Condition A.
The painting is accompanied by an expert report by PhDr. Šárka Leubnerová, who states among other things: "The representative painting Karlštejn represents one of the peaks of Ullik’s oeuvre of the 1870s. … The idyllic natural mood is further enhanced by a small narrative with a resting girl, which strengthens the emotional impact of the entire work."
O autorovi
Hugo Ullik se narodil 14. května 1838 na Malé Straně v Praze. Byl synem soudního úředníka Jana Ullika a jeho manželky Aloisie.
V letech 1854–1861 studoval na pražské Akademii v krajinářské škole Maxe Haushofera. Vystavoval poprvé roku 1860 v Krasoumné jednotě. Počátkem 60. let žil v neutěšených finančních poměrech, maloval v okolí Salcburku a marně žádal o státní stipendium. Roku 1864 se přestěhoval do Prahy a téhož roku se oženil s Marií Apollonií Freutovou. V letech 1871–1874 pokračoval ve studiích v mnichovské krajinářské škole Eduarda Schleicha. Doku 1877 žil převážně v Mnichově a podnikal cesty do Bavorských Alp. Po návratu do Čech se živil jako malíř divadelních dekorací v Praze, Plzni a Bratislavě. Jako ilustrátor přispíval kresbami českých hradů do časopisů Květy a Světozor.
Zemřel 9. ledna 1881 v Praze a byl pohřben na Olšanských hřbitovech.
