Anna Jožová is a Czech artist and designer who works with glass on the border between fine art and design. In 2023 she completed her master's degree in the Glass Studio led by Professor Rony Plesl at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague. Between 2016 and 2017 she studied in the Ceramic Design Studio under Antonín Tomášek at the Faculty of Art and Design of Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem. In 2019 she won the Collection/Product category at the Prague Design Week showcase. Since 2018 she has shown her work in numerous group exhibitions, fairs and art projects such as the Venice Design Biennial, Milan Design Week and the London Design Fair, as well as in the solo show EVERSIUM at the Kvalitář gallery in Prague. Alongside her own practice she collaborates with the designer Vlastimil Šenkýř, with whom she forms the artistic duo Kombo. She works consistently and above all in studio glass, combining various, at first sight incongruous materials with traditional glassmaking techniques to create unique new objects.
To understand Anna's work it is essential to know that she does not work in purely formal terms and is not concerned only with the visual effect of a piece. On the contrary, she always weighs the form carefully and chooses it on the basis of a given concept growing out of her natural interest in the world around her. With this comes a desire to explore and probe the limits of glass as a creative material and to push its technical possibilities. Experiment is therefore one of the most important approaches in her work, and it is what allows her to find new ways of working with glass. Combined with the conceptual background of most of her projects, this yields pieces that are design objects, yet the way the artist makes them and thinks about them shifts them into the realm of fine art. Since 2018 Anna Jožová has been creating series of her own vases, each of them a response to a theme she is currently exploring. Some of these series therefore partly build on one another, moving both her artistic and her technological approach into new territory. Her most significant theme to date is a reflection on the impact of human intervention on the environment, which she addresses in the Gaia, Keto and Nava series, among others.
