Lada Semecká is one of the leading names in Czech glass art. From 1994 to 2000 she studied in the Glass studio led by Vladimír Kopecký at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague, and during those years also completed study residencies in Riga and St Petersburg. After graduating she turned to her own artistic projects and took part in several international glass symposia and artist residencies. In 2006 she was honoured at the Coburger Glaspreis with the Barbara Kopellstaetter Award for Young Artist, and in 2022 she received the award for Outstanding Achievement – the Grand Prix of the Designblok design fair. Since 2017 she has led the Spatial Design studio at the Faculty of Art and Design in Ústí nad Labem, and in 2022 she founded the LAD studio together with the ceramicist Petr Lada. Among public collections, her work is represented in the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague, the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning (USA), the Toyama City Collection in Toyama (Japan) and the Jingdezhen City Collection (China). Her solo shows in recent years have been hosted by the Kuzebauch gallery in Prague, Kunstlervereinigung Blaue Fabrik in Dresden and Tonellico Gallery in Japan.

Lada Semecká’s works are like the artist herself: fragile and subtle, layered and inspiring. With her glass paintings and objects she looks back to the craft tradition of glassmaking, which she brings up to date with contemporary approaches. Although conceptually and formally she works through fully controlled processes, an essential part is always played by the element of chance during the final firing. The format of hanging glass paintings is unique in the Czech context, made all the more interesting by the framing the artist chooses herself. The influence of Japanese glass culture is unmistakable in her work, showing in her motifs as well as in her engraving technique. Layers of glass overlap, fill the space of the picture and, together with the light falling on them, create a depth the viewer can very easily sink into. "Through the material of glass Lada senses the atmosphere of the world around her; she communicates through it and with it. Her works reflect the balance of strength and fragility in nature; we feel in them order and lawfulness and at the same time personal closeness and sensitivity. Lada Semecká’s objects create a contemplative, concentrated state of wonder at the mystery of being within the created world," the art historian Jiří Zemánek has written of her work. Lada Semecká’s work is a good illustration that it is not always necessary to draw a line between art and design.
