Popis

GULAG Portraits series
Embroidery played a special role in the lives of women in GULAG and Soviet prisons: on the one hand, it is a testimony to the hard work of the prisoners, and on the other hand it used to connect them with their relatives, especially with their children left behind. The series is based on research of the accessible documents and each portrait has its name and history, leaving no room for anonymity or obscurity. Memory is the key to preventing the reoccurrence of such terror, and art can provide the society with the visualisation of historical documents, such as a victims’ list. Ida Levitskaya was shot in Sandarmokh.
