Distillery description

Glengoyne is a picturesque Scottish distillery located on the border of the Highlands and Lowlands regions. Founded in 1833 by the Edmonstone family under the original name of Burnfoot, the distillery came under the control of the Glasgow company Lang Bros. in 1876. They initially renamed it Glen Guin, and in 1905, it became Glengoyne. The distillation process at Glengoyne is significantly slower than that of other Scottish distilleries, contributing to the smooth, sweet, and fruity character of the distillate. It is dominated by notes of apples, pears, and bananas, which give the whisky its characteristic lightness and smoothness. A unique feature of the distillery is that the distillation takes place in the Highlands region, while the warehouses where the whisky matures are located across the road in the Lowlands. This geographical distinction is often highlighted in the brand's marketing. In 2003, the distillery was sold to Ian MacLeod, who focused on developing the Glengoyne brand as a premium single malt whisky and transforming it into a tourist destination. Today, more than 50,000 visitors come to the distillery annually.

Bottle description

Glengoyne 1972 Spirit Safe is a single malt whisky bottled directly by the Glengoyne distillery. This prestigious 35-year-old whisky was distilled in 1972 and bottled in 2007 as part of the exclusive "Spirit Safe" edition, which focuses on exceptionally old and limited bottlings.

Nose: Fruity notes of ripe bananas and sweet fruit punch mingle with subtle floral tones of apple blossom and elderberry. Nectarine and grapefruit follow, with subtle notes of vanilla bean and dry oak.

Taste: Lightly syrupy and smooth with hints of licorice and subtle spice, followed by a fine layer of lemon zest and light cashew. Rich honey sweetness and light oak follow. The finish transitions to dryness with a hint of almond and anise bitterness.

Finish: Medium to long, sweet, warm, with notes of orange and sweet wood, reminiscent of a fine confection.

The auctioned bottle is one of only 540 bottles and comes in an exclusive box that evokes the distillery's "Spirit Safe" equipment, making it a unique collector's item.
