Glenfarclas is a Scottish distillery in the Speyside region, near the village of Ballindalloch. It was founded in 1836 and since 1865 it has been managed by the Grant family, who have been running it for six generations. The name of the distillery means "valley of green grass", referring to the rich pastures surrounding its surroundings. This long-standing family supervision allows Glenfarclas to maintain traditional production methods and a careful approach to distillation, which is reflected in the character of their whisky.
The Grants are known for their careful business strategy and thoughtful approach to growth. As George Grant, the sixth generation of the family says, “We've been through 22 recessions. We only make what we can afford and we never borrow to make it.” This attitude allowed the distillery to increase its stock even when others were cutting production, ensuring it had enough older whiskeys to sell. Glenfarclas is also careful to maintain a strong brand by avoiding collaboration with independent bottlers.
An important feature of Glenfarclas is its aging of whiskey in Oloroso sherry casks, which gives the whiskey rich notes of dried fruit, spice and sweetness.
In 2007, the prestigious series The Family Casks was launched, which includes vintage editions of whiskey since 1954. This project is one of the most extensive among Scottish distilleries.
Glenfarclas 1989 is a single malt whisky, bottled directly by the Glenfarclas distillery as part of their prestigious The Family Casks series. Introduced in 2007, this series represents a selection of the finest casks from the Glenfarclas portfolio. Each bottling comes from a specific year (vintage), allowing customers to choose whiskies from vintages of personal or historical significance. Whiskies in this series are bottled at natural cask strength, without chill filtration or added coloring, preserving the whisky’s natural character and authentic flavor profile.
