Handwritten letter on paper with the letterhead "MICHEL SEUPHOR, 83 avenue Emile-Zola, Paris 15". The letter is dated June 12, 1974, and addressed to "Vážený pane" (Dear Sir). Michel Seuphor thanks for the letter, explaining that he no longer has a personal copy of the third volume of the book "L'Art Abstrait" (Abstract Art). Seuphor further writes that since the article on Czechoslovakia was written by Michel Ragon, he will pass the letter to him, hoping that he will be able to send the requested volume to the interested party. The letter ends with an expression of regret and a warm memory. This manuscript is a valuable testimony to the relationships between prominent artists and their memories of the Czechoslovak context in abstract art.
Author
Michel Seuphor, původním jménem Fernand Berckelaers, se narodil 10. března 1901 v Borgerhoutu. Byl belgickým malířem a významnou osobností v uměleckých kruzích.
V roce 1921 založil literární časopis Het Overzicht v Antverpách. Pohyboval se v nizozemských, belgických a francouzských avantgardních kruzích. Spolupracoval s Theo van Doesburgem a Pietem Mondrianem, byl ovlivněn jejich ikonickými neoplastickými díly. Spolu s Joaquínem Torresem-Garciou a Pierrem Daurou založil skupinu abstraktních umělců Cercle et Carré, do které patřili i Wassily Kandinsky a Le Corbusier.
V roce 1934 Seuphor po svatbě odešel do Anduze na jih Francie. Za svůj život napsal a editoval tři knihy: "A Dictionary of Abstract Painting" (Tudor Publishing Co., 1958), "Abstract Painting: 50 Years of Accomplishment" (Dell Laurel Edition, 1964) a "The Sculpture of this Century" (George Braziller, Inc. NY, 1960). Tyto knihy zůstávají mezi nejcennějšími dokumenty abstraktního malířství a sochařství 20. století.
Seuphor měl také vlastní sbírku současného umění s díly umělců jako Marcelle Cahn, Adam Jankowski, Jean Piaubert, Jean Gorin, Jean Miotte, Aurélie Nemours a Victor Vasarely.
Zemřel 12. února 1999 v Paříži, zanechávaje po sobě bohaté dědictví v oblasti abstraktního umění.
