A late work by Josef Liesler represents a characteristic synthesis of his imaginative, symbolic, and formally cultivated painterly expression. The composition of Pinwheel is built on the contrast of biomorphic and geometricised forms, which assemble into a fantastical, almost mechanical-organic whole. Stylised elements reminiscent of an eye, an architectural object or a technical apparatus create tension between the living and the constructed world – a motif that recurs repeatedly in the artist`s oeuvre.
The dominant purple background allows the rhythmically placed circular motifs and strips to stand out, evoking movement and rotation – the symbolic principle of the "pinwheel" as energy, transformation and inner dynamics. The precise drawing and smooth painting reference Liesler`s sense of order and construction, while the fantastical iconography places him within the line of Czech imaginative art inspired by Surrealism in the second half of the 20th century. The painting was created in the artist`s late period, when his expression is characterised by maturity, compositional purity and a concentration on a personal symbolic language. Pinwheel thus represents a fine example of the late work, in which playfulness, imagination and cultivated painterly discipline intertwine.
