About

This remarkable large-scale canvas (95.5 x 75 cm), dating from the late 17th or early 18th century, depicts the Holy Family executed by a Bohemian Master. The composition is governed by a powerful tenebrist chiaroscuro, wherein the figures—the Virgin Mary, the Infant Jesus, and Saint Joseph—emerge dramatically from a shadowy background, bathed in a warm, divine radiance. At the focal point, the Infant Jesus, wrapped in white garments and framed by a luminous halo, gazes outward with serene innocence. The Virgin Mary, her gaze lowered with maternal devotion, tenderly cradles the child, draped in dark robes. To the right, the rugged yet deeply gentle visage of Saint Joseph, holding a symbolic flowering staff, completes the protective harmony of the group. In the upper register, the subtly rendered form of a seraph enhances the spiritual depth of the piece. The painterly touch is rich and enveloping, typical of Bohemian masters of the period who prioritized spiritual resonance and the nobility of human expression. Oil on canvas, 95.5 x 75 cm
