About
This magnificent and dynamic vertical oil sketch (bozzetto) is a prime, autograph creation by the leading High Baroque master Sebastiano Conca. The composition centers on the enthroned Madonna and Child, who present the sacred scapular to St. Simon Stock, General Prior of the Carmelites, kneeling reverently on the left. On the right, St. John of the Cross directs his gaze outward, engaging the viewer in the divine act of grace, while a centrally seated putto anchors the lower steps with symbolic attributes.
The upper and lateral registers open into a theatrical heavenly realm filled with celestial attendants, a crowning angel, and sweeping architectural elements framed by rich drapery. Exhibiting Conca's characteristic fluid brushwork, vibrant theatricality, and sophisticated mastery of chiaroscuro, this museum-quality piece represents a crucial preparatory phase for monumental Roman ecclesiastical commissions of the 18th century.
Accompanied by a formal expert certificate issued by Dr. Johann Kronbichler (Spitz/Donau, August 22, 2026), confirming it as an authentic autograph oil sketch (Bozzetto) by Sebastiano Conca. Oil on canvas , 90 x 44 cm
