About

Measuring , this powerful, highly dramatic canvas is a prime example of 17th-century Venetian Baroque painting. Characterized by theatrical chiaroscuro, sensuous painterly handling, and heightened psychological suspense, the composition captures one of the most famous Old Testament narratives of betrayal and lost power. The scene depicts the climactic climax of the story of Samson and Delilah (Judges 16:19). Samson, the invincible hero of Israel, lies sound asleep with his head resting in the lap of his lover, Delilah, unaware that the secret of his supernatural strength—his long hair—is about to be stripped from him. Delilah forms the emotional anchor of the composition. Draped in luminous silk garments with her chest exposed, she holds the fatal shears in her lowered right hand. With her left index finger raised delicately to her lips, she commands silence from the approaching Philistine captors. To the right, the conspirators creep in from the shadows: a muscular Philistine soldier reaches forward with ropes to bind the hero, while an armored commander wearing a crested helmet and a bearded elder look on in hushed anticipation.
