A richly detailed bucolic landscape set beneath a dramatic twilight sky pierced by radiant light depicts the Old Testament story of Jacob at the well as three resting shepherds converse beside a massive stone wellhead while a mixed flock of sheep goats and a heavily laden donkey gather to drink. Executed in the workshop of the Spanish Baroque painter Pedro Orrente (1580–1645), the composition reflects his pioneering naturalistic style and earthy palette developed after his formative travels in Italy, where he absorbed the Venetian traditions of pastoral narrative. The artist pays meticulous attention to the anatomy and woolly textures of the livestock, the expressive poses of the rustic figures, and the dramatic chiaroscuro that highlights the central well against the darkening landscape. In the far background, a solitary shepherd guides his flock along a winding mountain path, emphasizing the narrative depth of the scene.
