This monumental panel painting of a nocturnal landscape constitutes a rare and exceptional masterpiece within the early corpus of the Dutch master Herman Saftleven. Officially documented and published in the exhibition catalog of the Barockmuseum Oberaudorf ("Faszination – Sehnsucht – Entdeckung – Europäische Landschaftsmalerei im 17. und 18. Jahrhundert"), the work exemplifies the artist's early period from the 1630s to the 1640s. The composition is defined by its masterful handling of atmospheric nocturnal effects (nocturne), wherein a full moon dramatically pierces heavy, roiling clouds, casting silvery reflections across the tranquil water.
