About

This charming, small-scale holy water font (Weihwasserbecken) is an authentic piece of ecclesiastical art dating to the 17th century. Carved from a warm-toned marble, the basin is shaped in a stylized, organic lobed form that resembles a natural shell or a blossoming flower. The craftsmanship is modest yet refined, emphasizing the tactile quality of the stone and the graceful, flowing contours of the basin’s rim. The interior of the bowl features a subtle relief design that mirrors its external lobed structure, converging toward the base. At the rear, the vessel includes a flat, unpolished attachment tab, which originally served to mount the font securely against a church wall or a pillar, often near the entrance of a place of worship. The presence of a historic metal mounting bracket on the reverse confirms its traditional usage. Given its proportions and material, this piece is characteristic of the devout domestic or small-chapel artistry common in the Austrian regions during the Baroque era. Marble, 23 x 23 cm; Height 12 cm
