The piece masterfully balances the architectural rigor of the Empire style with exotic ornamentation, reflecting the European elite's desire to integrate Egyptian antiquity into their domestic interiors at the dawn of the 19th century. The armchair's most striking feature is the pair of finely carved sphinxes supporting the armrests, each wearing the pharaonic nemes headscarf, which imbues the chair with a sense of monumental authority. The armchair originated from Hainfeld Castle near Feldbach, Styria, recognized as the largest moated castle in the region. From 1835, Hainfeld served as Hammer-Purgstall’s summer residence, where he established the largest secular library in Styria, transforming the castle into a landmark of intellectual achievement.
