About

This charming and meticulously rendered panel painting, measuring 30 x 22.5 cm, encapsulates Reichert's mastery as an animal painter. The composition features two horses looking down from a stable stall or courtyard structure toward two attentive dogs seated below. Rendered with the fine brushwork and intimate detail characteristic of his oeuvre, the work captures a quiet, narrative interaction between the animals, showcasing the artist's profound anatomical understanding and sensitivity toward texture, light, and expression. Carl Reichert was a recognized painter of animals and town scenes, born in Vienna on August 27, 1836, and who passed away in Gratz on April 5, 1918. He came from an artistic family as the son of the portrait and animal painter Heinrich Reichert and the brother of Heinrich Reichert. Carl studied at the Academy of Drawing in Graz, continued his education in Munich, and spent the years 1866 to 1867 working in Rome. From 1869 to 1910 he worked in Vienna before later returning to Gratz. Beyond painting, he published a series of engravings depicting 'old' Gratz, focusing in particular on the castle. He is especially well known for his small-scale, highly detailed portraits of dogs. Oil on wood , 30 x 22.5 cm
