About

The painting illustrates the culminating moment of one of Europe's most popular medieval legends: the story of Geneviève de Brabant. According to the myth, falsely accused of infidelity by her husband's steward, Geneviève is condemned to death, but is spared by the executioners and abandoned in the wild Ardennes forest. There, she survives for years alongside her infant child, miraculously nourished by a doe. The composition captures the exact moment her husband (or his hunters) accidentally rediscovers her. On the left, two male figures stand out: a noble hunter dressed in late-medieval attire holding a crossbow, and his companion tightly holding the leash of an alert hunting hound with its gaze fixed toward the grotto. At the entrance of a massive stone cave, Geneviève is depicted semi-nude, draped in heavy folds of ochre fabric, holding her child protectively to her chest. Standing beside her is the faithful deer, a central element of the legend, looking cautiously toward the intruders. The large-scale format (122.5 x 185 cm) grants the scene a theatrical, commanding presence. Warm, picturesque lighting illuminates the flesh tones of the figures and the coats of the animals, creating a dramatic and emotional contrast against the dark, massive rocks and dense forest in the background. Oil on canvas , 125.5 x 185 cm .
