About
A monumental religious composition depicting the Virgin Mary as the Immaculate Conception standing upon a crescent moon surrounded by a choir of putti and cherubs emerging from ethereal clouds. The work is executed in the style of the famous Spanish Baroque master Bartolomé Esteban Murillo reflecting his iconic iconographical scheme characterized by Mary in a white robe with a dark blue mantle her hands folded gently across her chest and her gaze directed upward in divine contemplation. The painting captures the soft sfumato lighting delicate flesh tones and sweet idealized facial expressions that defined 17th-century Spanish devotional art. The canvas is housed in a carved wooden frame with stepped corners and decorative gilding accents with the reverse revealing the canvas stretched on a wooden strainer frame. Oil on canvas, 111 x 88 cm.
