About

Japan, early 20th century (1910s–1920s, Meiji/Taishō period) This elegant and dynamic sheet is another masterpiece by Ohara Koson, originating from his highly acclaimed early period. The print was published by Daikokuya, for whom the artist worked under the signature Koson. The scene captures three red-rumped swallows (Hirundo daurica) in mid-flight with absolute lightness and grace. The birds navigate around gently cascading willow branches, representing a classic motif combination that is highly popular in Japan. The composition brilliantly utilizes the long, narrow o-tanzaku format, emphasizing the vertical movement of both the branches and the flight. This is a fine impression; although the colors have slightly faded due to age, the print retains its light margin and immense collector's appeal.
