A refined winter scene by Toyohara Chikanobu, one of the last great masters of the Utagawa school. A group of women steps out of a pavilion into a snow-covered garden with a pond and a stone lantern; one of them holds a white umbrella while the others watch the falling snow. Chikanobu approached the theme of beauties in a landscape (bijin-ga) with remarkable delicacy and attention to the decorative richness of kimono and architectural details. The scene embodies the ideal of serene elegance and seasonal beauty characteristic of the late Meiji era, while reflecting the artist’s ability to blend traditional poetics with a modern sense of composition and color.
