About

CURATOR'S TIP: Head  with a Square Eye belongs among the iconic motifs of the late artistic period of Stanislav Libenský and Jaroslava Brychtová, one of the most celebrated partnerships in the history of studio glass. This monumental sculpture perfectly demonstrates the artists' unique ability to transform glass into a medium of light, space and emotional expression. The stylised human head is conceived not as a portrait but as a universal symbol of perception, consciousness and inner vision. The characteristic square eye creates a striking optical focal point whose appearance changes continuously with the surrounding light. The luminous light-blue glass possesses exceptional clarity and depth. Depending on viewing angle and illumination, the sculpture reveals constantly changing reflections, refractions and subtle colour transitions. Created using cast glass, grinding, polishing and sandblasting techniques, the work exemplifies the technical mastery for which Libenský and Brychtová became internationally renowned. The head motif remained one of the most important themes throughout the artists' careers. The present sculpture is an original artist's work, signed by both Stanislav Libenský and Jaroslava Brychtová and dated 1989. As is typical for many monumental cast-glass sculptures by the artists, the work is not edition-numbered. Combining artistic importance, exhibition history, exceptional craftsmanship and collector appeal, it represents a rare opportunity to acquire a museum-quality example of Czech studio glass. Provenance: From the extensive private St. Martin Collection. Exhibited in 1999 at the Černá růže Glass Gallery in Benešov nad Ploučnicí. Original work signed by Stanislav Libenský and Jaroslava Brychtová and dated 1989. Condition: Excellent collector's condition without visible damage. Viewing: The sculpture may be viewed in person during opening hours at Art Gallery Cafe in Prague prior to the auction.
