CURATOR'S TIP: Winter Landscape with a Sawmill from 1936 is an excellent example of the mature landscape painting of Oldřich Blažíček, one of the most important Czech painters of the first half of the twentieth century. The artist captures a snow-covered countryside with remarkable sensitivity to winter atmosphere, changing light and subtle tonal transitions. A road leading into the distance naturally guides the viewer through the composition and creates a convincing sense of depth and space. On the horizon appears a rural settlement with a sawmill, providing the scene with a distinct human presence while preserving the tranquility of the landscape. Blažíček masterfully balances bright snow-covered surfaces, dark tree silhouettes and the muted tones of a winter sky. The restrained yet refined colour palette perfectly conveys the mood of the Czech Highlands. His ability to capture the spirit of a place without excessive detail remains one of the defining qualities of his art. The painting combines calmness, harmony and a vivid sense of natural observation. Of particular importance is the work's connection to the Vysočina region, one of the artist's lifelong sources of inspiration. An inscription on the reverse reads “Winter in Vysočina 1936”, documenting the original designation of the motif and supporting its regional context.
