František Tichý (1896–1961) ranks among the most distinctive figures of Czech modern art of the 20th century. A painter, graphic artist, illustrator and stage designer, he created an unmistakable visual world characterised by refined drawing, imagination, poetry and subtle melancholy. Circus and variety performers, acrobats, clowns, harlequins and other figures inhabiting the boundary between reality and theatrical imagination became characteristic subjects of his oeuvre. The present Wedding Announcement, dating from 1958, is a charming and highly distinctive graphic work demonstrating Tichý's characteristic combination of imagination, visual economy and subtle humour. The central motif consists of a stylised bride and groom standing upon a tall structure reminiscent of a circus or acrobatic apparatus. The elongated male figure contrasts with the smaller female figure, while their joined hands form a simple yet eloquent gesture of unity. The inscription „OZNAMUJEME NÁŠ SŇATEK“ („We Announce Our Marriage“) appears across the upper part of the composition, while additional lettering is incorporated vertically into the right-hand side. Typography thus becomes an integral part of the visual composition. Tichý works with remarkable economy. A limited number of precise lines is sufficient to define the figures, their posture and their relationship. This ability to express a maximum with a minimum of means is one of the defining qualities of his graphic work. The drypoint technique gives the lines their characteristic softness and velvety quality, while the subtle tonal structure of the printed surface provides an atmospheric ground for the sharply defined figures. Despite the miniature dimensions of 11.5 × 8.5 cm, the composition possesses a surprisingly strong visual presence. Hand-signed in pencil „Tichý“ below the printed image and dated. The preserved label on the reverse identifies the work as Svatební oznámení, records the drypoint technique and dates the work to 1958. Matted, glazed and framed.
