František Kupka (1871–1957) ranks among the most important figures of European modern art and one of the pioneers of abstract painting. Born in Opočno, he studied in Prague and Vienna and from the end of the 19th century lived predominantly in France. In his early career he worked with Symbolist figuration, illustration and drawing, before gradually developing a radical abstract language based on rhythm, colour and movement. His figurative works from the early 20th century often explore the female nude, movement, emotional intensity and the relationship between the human body and surrounding space. These studies provide a fascinating insight into Kupka's transition from classical figuration towards a freer modernist visual language. He subsequently became one of the key figures of the European avant-garde and made a fundamental contribution to the development of abstract art. The evocative figurative composition Ecstasy depicts a female nude at a moment of intense emotional expression. The woman is shown with her head tilted back, long flowing hair and her hands clasped near her chest, lending the scene a sense of inner tension and almost mystical exaltation. Kupka works primarily through drawing, delicate shading and sensitive modelling of the human body. The figure is set within an indistinct coloured space that further enhances its psychological intensity. Despite its intimate dimensions, the work has a remarkably concentrated and almost monumental presence. The facial expression and gesture of the hands give the composition a strongly Symbolist character, characteristic of Kupka's figurative work from the beginning of the 20th century.
