An expressive landscape by Leopold Musil depicting a village set within the countryside near Jevíčko. Tall trees dominate the foreground, their trunks and branches creating a strong vertical structure while framing a view of houses with red roofs. Beyond the village, the landscape opens towards broad fields and distant rolling hills. Musil employs an exceptionally energetic painterly technique. Oil paint is applied in thick, at times almost relief-like layers, with individual brush and palette-knife strokes deliberately left visible. Trees, roofs, shrubs and distant fields are therefore not described through meticulous detail but constructed through areas of colour and dynamic lines. The palette is based on earthy ochres, browns and grey-greens enlivened by brighter yellow and orange accents. The reddish-orange roofs form natural focal points within the composition, while the lighter tones of the distant fields open the painting towards the horizon. The overall atmosphere evokes the transition between summer and autumn, when the countryside begins to acquire warmer tones. Leopold Musil (1920–1997) was a Czech painter and landscape artist whose oeuvre focused particularly on landscapes and urban subjects. After the Second World War he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague under Ján Želibský. During his studies he received the Academy's second prize in 1947 and again in 1949. His works were also exhibited internationally, including in Vienna, Oslo, Tokyo, Toronto and Buenos Aires. Musil's landscapes are characterised by immediacy and by his ability to transform a particular location into a powerful painterly experience. Rather than pursuing photographic accuracy, he captures the character and atmosphere of the countryside through colour, texture and rhythmic brushwork. Particularly effective in the present work is the contrast between the dense network of trees and village roofs in the foreground and the broad, almost tranquil landscape stretching into the distance. The work is signed “Musil” lower left. The reverse retains Leopold Musil's artist's stamp and an original handwritten label identifying the subject as “U Jevíčka” (Near Jevíčko), together with information relating to the technique and dimensions. Executed in oil on hardboard, the painting measures 49 × 39 cm excluding the frame and is framed.
