An atmospheric winter cityscape by Leopold Musil depicting snow-covered Loretánské Square in Prague's Hradčany district with the characteristic tower of the Prague Loreto. The dominant tower with its greenish cupola rises against the cool blue winter sky, while the surrounding architecture is constructed in muted ochre, green and grey tones. The broad expanse of snow in the foreground is modelled with sweeping strokes of almost white paint, lending the composition remarkable luminosity. Small staffage figures walking across the snowy square enliven the scene, including a charming adult-and-child pair in the foreground. These human details give the otherwise monumental urban setting an intimate and immediate quality. Leopold Musil was a Czech painter and landscape artist of the 20th century who studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague under Ján Želibský after the Second World War. His work is characterised by expressive colour, substantial impasto and an ability to transform a specific landscape or urban motif into an independent painterly experience. This approach is particularly evident in the present work: viewed closely, the snow, buildings, figures and tower dissolve into individual structures of paint, while from a distance they unite into a convincing winter view of Prague. Executed in oil on hardboard, the work measures 25.5 × 34.5 cm excluding the frame and is signed “Musil” lower right. The painting is framed.
