Leopold Musil (1920–1997) was a Czech painter whose work included landscapes and urban subjects, characterised by a sensitivity to the atmosphere of a particular place, cultivated colour and an ability to integrate architecture naturally into its surroundings.

The present painting depicts the Church of St Roch in Olšany, Prague, a distinctive historic landmark in the Žižkov district. The Baroque church, with its characteristic central form and dome, is shown during winter, when the bare surrounding trees reveal and emphasise its distinctive silhouette.

Rather than creating a documentary architectural record, Musil focuses primarily on the atmosphere of the place. The church emerges from the winter surroundings through a restrained palette of grey, brown, ochre and bluish tones. Bare branches form a delicate linear structure in front of the architecture while simultaneously enhancing the sense of spatial depth. The artist's loose painterly handling gives the composition vitality and immediacy, while the subdued light reinforces the quiet mood of a winter day.

Leopold Musil, významný český výtvarník, se narodil 2. prosince 1920 v Lukách nad Jihlavou. Studoval reálné gymnázium v Moravských Budějovicích a po skončení války pokračoval ve studiu na pražské Akademii výtvarných umění u profesora Jána Želibského. Během svého studia získal v letech 1947 a 1949 II. cenu Akademie, což bylo ocenění jeho výjimečného uměleckého talentu.

Leopold Musil byl členem Svazu československých výtvarných umělců a během svého života se účastnil mnoha zahraničních výstav v Oslo, Vídni, Tokiu, Torontu, Buenos Aires a dalších městech. V domácím prostředí pravidelně vystavoval v Praze v letech 1951-1969 na výstavách Jednoty umělců výtvarných a v předních pražských salónech. Výrazně se zapojil do kulturní scény a roku 1954 se účastnil výstavy „Mladá generace v ČSR“ v Brně.

Musil měl také řadu samostatných výstav, které probíhaly v různých českých městech, včetně Prahy, Jihlavy, Moravských Budějovic, Českých Budějovic, Kralup, Plzně a Rakovníka. Jeho díla byla známá svou originalitou a technickou brilancí, a Musil si získal respekt jak doma, tak i za hranicemi.

Leopold Musil zemřel v roce 1997.
