Zdeněk Sýkora (1920–2011) ranks among the most important Czech artists of the second half of the 20th century and internationally respected pioneers of constructivist and computer-assisted art. Born in Louny, he maintained a lifelong connection with the landscape of northern Bohemia, particularly the Ohře region and the Central Bohemian Uplands. During the 1950s he devoted himself intensively to plein-air landscape painting, and through the gradual simplification of natural forms he moved towards abstraction at the beginning of the 1960s. The period around 1962 represents one of the decisive moments in his artistic development. In 1962–1963 his first structural works emerged, and he subsequently began employing mathematical principles and computers in the organisation of pictorial structures, becoming one of the international pioneers of this approach. Nevertheless, throughout his life he continued to return to plein-air landscape painting. Central Bohemian Uplands, dated 1962, depicts the broad open landscape of northern Bohemia, a region intimately connected with Sýkora’s life and work. The composition is constructed through several spatial planes, leading the eye from the flowering meadow and path in the foreground through groups of trees and rural buildings towards the distant horizon of rolling hills. The palette is based on greens, yellows, ochres and reddish-brown tones, creating a lively rhythm across the pictorial surface. The light sky and distant hills contrast with the denser colour structures of the foreground and middle distance. Although the landscape remains clearly legible, the treatment of colour planes already suggests Sýkora’s growing interest in their mutual relationships and in the progressive simplification of observed reality. Around the turn of the 1950s and 1960s his landscape painting underwent a fundamental transformation, leading from direct observation of nature through the Gardens cycle towards abstract and subsequently geometric compositions. The painting, dated 1962, therefore belongs to an exceptionally important period in the artist’s development. The composition remains firmly connected with the landscape of the Central Bohemian Uplands, which served as a lifelong source of inspiration for Sýkora. Its dimensions of 50 × 70 cm give the work a strong gallery presence and allow the relationships between the individual colour planes to unfold fully. The reverse of the canvas and stretcher bears preserved information relating to the work, including the artist’s signature, the title Středohoří, the date 1962 and an indication of the technique. Provenance: extensive private Moravian collection. The work is preserved in very good condition.
