About
Roses (2024) is a richly painted floral composition by contemporary Ukrainian artist German Medvetsky. A generous bouquet emerges dramatically from a darker background, with delicate shades of pink, cream and white balanced by deeper green foliage. Rather than treating the flowers as a precise botanical study, Medvetsky explores colour, light and the physical character of oil paint. Individual petals are constructed through visible, energetic brushstrokes and layers of pigment, giving the blossoms a vivid sense of volume and painterly vitality. Viewed closely, the surface becomes an almost abstract interplay of colour and texture; from a distance, these individual marks merge into a harmonious bouquet. Light plays a central role, allowing selected blossoms to emerge from the darker surroundings and creating a strong sense of depth. Born in Odesa in 1967, German Medvetsky studied art before continuing his education in architecture and subsequently devoted himself professionally to painting. His artistic approach draws on Romanticism, Symbolism and the traditions of classical and Impressionist painting. Floral still lifes form a recurring part of his oeuvre alongside marine subjects and views associated with his native Odesa. Executed in oil on canvas, 45 × 30 cm.
