David Krňanský belongs among the young contemporary artists who are already well established with Czech collectors. In 2010 and 2011 he studied in Jiří Kovanda's studio at the Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem and then in the studio of Jiří Černický and Marek Meduna at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague, where he received his bachelor's degree in 2017. During his studies he founded the artist group BHG (Black Hole Generation) together with his fellow students Julius Reichel, Martin Lukáč and Štěpán Marek. Of his many solo and group exhibitions in the Czech Republic, we may name the presentations at the Prague galleries Futura, Berlínskej model and Hunt Kastner, as well as at Galerie města Plzně and the Brno House of Arts. Among international institutions, mention should go to the LETO gallery in Warsaw and IVAN Gallery in Bucharest. His work was also presented at Prague Art Week 2022, and in 2022 and 2023 he completed a residency at the Telegraph gallery in Olomouc. Today his work can be found in many private art collections.

Most of us associate David Krňanský's work with abstract geometric paintings in utilitarian colours and a characteristic formal vocabulary that reinterprets the principles of modernist approaches. In 2024, however, a major change entered his practice. "I had been working with geometry ever since school and I needed to move somewhere new," he explains. A wave of expressive, intuitive, wild painting has swept over David's canvases and his entire studio. Although he still keeps his distinctive colour palette and, in some works, hints of geometric planes or a glimpse into a blurred landscape, his large-format canvases are taking on a far more dynamic, impulsive character. "At school they taught me to think about a painting first and paint afterwards. Now I paint first and think about the work afterwards. I try to trust my intuition," he says of his practice. Paint applied in many layers often takes on a sculptural quality. His sweeping yet sensitively rhythmical gestures reflect the passion and the new energy that came with this transformation.
