According to Wikipedia, a spacesuit is a type of protective suit that protects its wearer from the adverse effects of the environment. It is a specially designed "body" layer that is based on the shape of the body in its basic aspects and allows a person to function even in extreme conditions that are incompatible with life. Given that it has to meet special requirements, it goes beyond the normal forms in terms of appearance and material qualities. On the one hand, it is characterised by a certain schematicism and robustness, on the other hand, subtlety and attention to detail. In addition, it usually derives from natural frameworks. It is similar with the works of sculptor Hana Svobodová.
Her eponymous exhibition not only opens up general questions of corporeality, so that from different angles she considers the non/presence of the body, the possibilities of its imprints on reality and the associations that may accompany them, but also deals with states of threat, vulnerability, pain and ultimately death. At least from this perspective, it exhibits an existential dimension. For Hana Svobodová, the spacesuit is an open symbol. It can be a cloak, a case or a wrapping, but it is always a kind of refuge. Sometimes from the world, sometimes from oneself. Her methods are based on experienced creative processes, followed by intuitiveness, so that on her wrapping objects it is possible to find places sprayed with chrome evoking data technology as well as texture reminiscent of confectionery "meringues". A sense of agonizing sensitivity is brought about by impaled peans.
The feathers shift everything into a hybrid position on the unidentifiable border between human and animal, so that levitation is not surprising in the installation. "Weightlessness" evokes the non-standard conditions for which the suits are designed, but it is also close to the artfully knitted nests of dreamers, for example, whose colonies people burn with flamethrowers. This brings back in an arc the motif of the basic endeavour of life - to be able to survive in a hostile environment. The negative factors the suit is designed to protect against include -
among other things - pressure, and it doesn't matter whether it's the pressure of deep space or the pressure of everyday life, where vacuum, extreme temperatures or radiation are replaced by emptiness, stuffiness and toxic relationships. In the end, the only thing that remains is the ability to breathe freely and without fear.
