Marius Kotrba is a prominent Czech sculptor, painter, and university lecturer. He became widely known primarily thanks to 
his monumental sculptures in public spaces. Even during his studies, he sought his own authentic style of painting, 
which he considered at the time to be freer and more important, and he actively participated in unofficial exhibitions, 
known as Confrontations. In addition to human figures, his more dramatic paintings feature friendly angelic beings 
or aggressive dogs. Similar scenes can also be found on Kotrba's colored fired clay and marble reliefs 
or in his numerous collections of drawings. Today, he is considered one of the most prominent members of the 1980s generation, 
but he did not find his original expression until the early 1990s.

In his work, we can observe the development of means of expression and morphology, a tendency towards a lapidary simplification of forms, 
without losing objectivity. The generosity of form, solid shape, and stylized body shapes are also characteristic of his more intimate works. Especially in the last period of Kotrba's life, the motifs of his reliefs correspond very closely to his paintings, responding to interpersonal relationships with irony, exaggeration, and sarcasm. Tension and emotional charge are inherent in all areas of his work – sculptures, reliefs, paintings, and drawings.

Marius Kotrba (1959–2011) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague from 1981 to 1987 (monumental sculpture, 
S. Hanzík, M. Axman). From the spring of 1990, he worked as an assistant at Prof. Hugo Demartini's sculpture school at the reformed Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, and subsequently taught drawing and sculpture in the Netherlands at the Minerva Academy in Groningen. He continued his teaching work at the University of Ostrava, where he was appointed professor in 2011. He participated in a number of symposia (e.g., Hořice, Rožnov, Kuks) and realized several complex monumental commissions in public spaces (e.g., Sculpture for Ostrava,

St. Elizabeth, St. Christopher, both for Lepper-Mühle in Germany, St. Christopher for the Olomouc motorway bypass, Justice in Brno).
 

Marius Kotrba, narozen 30. září 1959 v Čeladné, byl významný český akademický sochař, malíř, kreslíř a pedagog.

Kotrba studoval na SUPŠ v Uherském Hradišti v letech 1974–1978 a poté pokračoval ve studiu sochařství na Akademii výtvarných umění (AVU) v Praze v letech 1981–1987. Během svého působení na AVU studoval v sochařském ateliéru profesorů Stanislava Hanzíka a Miloše Axmana.

Po odchodu z Prahy se Marius Kotrba trvale usadil v Rožnově pod Radhoštěm a začal se plně věnovat sochařským kompozicím od roku 1993. Jeho tvorba zahrnuje mnoho pozoruhodných skulptur a plastik v různých materiálech. Jeho sochy jsou známé pro stylizované figurální formy, charakteristické pro jejich rourovitý a rázovitý vzhled.

Některé z jeho významných děl zahrnují plastiku "Svatý Kryštof" (1993), bronzovou sochu "Spravedlnost" před budovou brněnského Nejvyššího správního soudu (2009) a monumentální bronzové sousoší "Dobrý pastýř" (2011), které bylo instalováno v Podhoří u dálnice D1 po umělcově smrti. Kotrba rovněž působil jako pedagog a vedl sochařský obor na Ostravské univerzitě. Za své umělecké dílo obdržel několik ocenění, včetně Ceny za sochařství od Nadace Lux et Lapis v roce 2000.

Marius Kotrba zemřel na infarkt dne 17. května 2011. Jeho památka byla uctěna pojmenováním ulice v Rožnově pod Radhoštěm po něm.
