Jan Steklík is one of the most important names in Czech visual art. Together with Karel Nepraš (1932–2002), he became the legendary director of the Křižovnické School of Pure Humor Without Jokes. It was founded in the now defunct U Křižovníků pub in Prague's Old Town as a loose association based on connecting everyday reality with art. Jan Steklík's work took shape in the late 1950s. He intensively developed his "Křižovnická" concept in the spirit of total creative freedom and independence from any authority, opposed to all forms of political and institutional establishment, especially during the period of normalization and communism, when, among other things, he created his series Odstřihovánek, Zamalovánek, Nalepovánek, and Střihů na krajinu. Parallel to these, he also created subtle drawings, known as Ňadrovky.

Both phases of Steklík's work, traveling and resident, are connected by the "eternal" theme of Ňadrovky. They emerged early on from the roots and tendrils of his vegetative existence as a powerful stream and all-consuming erotic symbol of the pilgrim's rest, his only solace and exciting security.

Something rolled out like waves from below, and I saw Honza Steklík as the most persistent infant at the breast of his Ňadrovky, which had nourished him during that long time without time. He was sidelined from official art for lack of loyalty. I find this to be more than sufficient excuse for the aforementioned cynicism, and I also see that Steklík will not improve in the current predatory economic climate. Constantly without ambition to become an "artist," he became a respected master of the thinnest drawn line.

Jan Steklík se narodil 5. června 1938 v Ústí nad Orlicí. 

Studoval na Střední průmyslové škole textilní v Ústí nad Orlicí, avšak studia nedokončil kvůli neshodám s pedagogickým sborem. Proslavil se jako výtvarník, grafik, ilustrátor, malíř, kreslíř, vizuální básník a performer. 

Byl spoluzakladatelem Křižovnické školy čistého humoru bez vtipu spolu s Karlem Neprašem, což bylo umělecké uskupení charakterizované recesistickou poetikou. Jeho dílo zahrnovalo informel, landart, happeningy a bylo součástí hnutí Fluxus, čímž získalo mezinárodní rozsah. 

Přes omezené možnosti veřejné prezentace v období 1970–1989 se Steklík uživil volnou tvorbou a fotografováním. Po pádu režimu v roce 1989 pokračoval ve své tvorbě a významně přispěl k brněnskému konceptuálnímu umění. 

Zemřel 11. listopadu 2017 ve svém domově v Ústí nad Orlicí.
