The main theme of Pinkava's work is precisely pointed parallels, quotations, and connotations to the great stories of European culture. Pinkava uses the human body and faces as a mirror of cultural meanings, without resigning himself to the authentic identity of a particular person. Thanks to their emphasized, purely personal physiognomy, the portraits represent references to icons of the European pictorial tradition. In carefully arranged scenes, the figures multiply their personal identities through gestures, expressions, and attributes in favor of broader meanings based on clear links to myths, biblical stories, introspection of inner life, but also to cultural memory drawn from the history of fine arts and literature.

Ivan Pinkava, narozený 1. února 1961 v Náchodě, je uznávaný český fotograf a vysokoškolský pedagog. Po studiu na Střední průmyslové škole grafické v Praze v letech 1977–1981 pokračoval ve vzdělávání na Filmové a televizní fakultě Akademie múzických umění v Praze, kde v období 1982–1986 studoval obor Umělecká fotografie. Pinkava je spoluzakladatelem Pražského domu fotografie, který byl založen v roce 1989 společně s dalšími předními českými fotografy. V pozdních 90. letech 20. století zastával pozici předsedy správní rady této instituce. Mezi lety 2005 a 2007 působil jako vedoucí pedagog fotografického ateliéru na Vysoké škole uměleckoprůmyslové v Praze. Ve své umělecké praxi se Pinkava soustředí na volnou fotografii, ve které často prozkoumává hlubší vrstvy lidské existence a identitu skrze své charakteristické vizuální jazyky.
