Jan Hendrych belongs to a generation of artists who formed their artistic views in the oppressive climate of the propagandistic 1950s and spent much of their lives creating art during the inhospitable times of normalization and the communist regime. It is no wonder that these artists sought solid ground in the interwar avant-garde and reestablished broken connections not only with the ideas of the founders of modernism, but also with the legacy of more than a thousand years of European culture.

Jan Hendrych was naturally drawn to the interest in the figure and the evocation of a new relationship between reality and man, which in the European context is referred to as new figuration, and his work also fits into this trend. It should be emphasized, however, that with his specific sculptural language built on the modernist tradition and expressive-technological experimentation, Hendrych occupies a distinctive and unmistakable position in the Czech new figuration movement.

Jan Hendrych se narodil 28. listopadu 1936 v Praze do rodiny právníka a sochařky. 

Vzdělání zahájil na Střední průmyslové škole bytové tvorby a pokračoval na Vysoké škole uměleckoprůmyslové v Praze, kde studoval v ateliérech Josefa Wagnera a Jana Kavana. Postgraduální studium absolvoval na Akademii výtvarných umění u Karla Hladíka a Karla Lidického. 

Hendrych se začal výrazně prezentovat na výstavě Socha 1964 a vystavoval s avantgardními výtvarníky. Po roce 1968, kdy mu byla omezena možnost vystavovat, se věnoval restaurování soch. V roce 1988 mohl opět vystavit svou tvorbu v Galerii hlavního města Prahy. V roce 1990 převzal vedení Ateliéru figurálního sochařství na AVU, kde byl následně jmenován profesorem. 

Hendrych se také věnoval pedagogické činnosti na Akademii umění v Banské Bystrici a působil v různých uměleckých a státních organizacích, včetně role prorektora AVU a vedení kurzů figurálního modelování na Akademii v Helsinkách.
