Marie Ladrová is a painter, musician and multimedia artist. In 2012 she graduated from Milan Knížák's intermedia studio at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. Her practice today is split between two disciplines - playing the theremin, for which she has her own band MR, and watercolour. She teaches both privately in her studio. She also teaches watercolour at the Praga Prima studio and leads watercolour workshops for the National Gallery Prague. Her work has been shown in many group and solo exhibitions in the Czech Republic and abroad. Recent solo shows include Úvahy, důkazy a zprávy o účincích at Galerie Sam83, Out..rez..les.. at Výklady AXA in Prague and Akvarely at Gumárna in Čáslav.

Watercolour is the artist's foremost technique, and she develops its technology and its expressive range along a path of her own - making her own paints, working in unusual formats, pursuing analytical studies as well as abstract compositions. Her watercolours draw free inspiration from plein-air studies of particular landscapes or of fungal fruiting bodies, or from her own dreams. She sees the resulting images as the outcome of a wrestling match with an element. The improvisation and the permeability of shapes, lines, colours and spaces that are characteristic of the technique come naturally to her. In her drawings and paintings she also connects the visual worlds of Chinese and Japanese ink painting, of William Turner and of the old recipes of cloth dyers. She treats watercolour, quite as a matter of course, as a many-layered and complex phenomenon.

The artist's long-standing interest is the kingdom of fungi. It has a dreamlike quality for her, and in mycelium she sees an analogy with the network of the human subconscious. She lets her own dream imagery enter the pictures naturally. She stresses how important the interconnection of the filamentous structures of fungi is. Hidden as they are from the ordinary human eye, as a highly intelligent system they allow information to pass between an enormous number of organisms of different species. Mycelium is in fact an information field, powerful not least through the wisdom it has gathered over time.
