About

The painting Winter in the Village, dating from 1934, depicts a snow-covered rural scene with traditional wooden buildings. Jan Hála, whose artistic work is closely associated with the Slovak countryside, frequently explored the everyday lives of village inhabitants and the surrounding landscape. The central motif of the composition is a large cottage with a steep, snow-covered roof, in front of which stand two small figures dressed in red-orange clothing and blue headscarves. A bird flying across the upper left part of the painting completes the scene.

The painting is characterized by pronounced, sculptural-looking applications of paint and energetic brushstrokes that emphasize the texture of the snow-covered roofs and uneven terrain. Predominantly white, grey, and bluish tones of the snow are complemented by the warm brown hues of the wooden buildings and the red-orange accents of the figures' clothing. The contrast between the cool colours of the winter setting and the warmer tones of individual elements lends the composition a sense of liveliness and enhances the atmosphere of rural life.

The work is executed in oil on canvas, measuring 40 × 41 cm, dated 1934, and signed in the lower right corner. The painting is framed.

Author

Jan Hála, křtěný Jan Antonín, se narodil 19. ledna 1890 v jihočeském městě Blatná. Absolvoval obecnou školu v Blatné a následně gymnázium v Českých Budějovicích, kde v roce 1909 maturoval a odešel studovat do Prahy.

Roku 1922 navštívil Most, kde se inspiroval hornickou prací a vytvořil díla s tímto motivem.
