About

he watercolour View of Malá Strana captures a picturesque panorama of Prague's historic Lesser Town, with its densely arranged houses, rooftops, and church towers. The foreground features an intricate arrangement of roofs and chimneys, above which rise the distinctive dome and bell tower of the Church of St. Nicholas. The distant cityscape gradually fades into a softly veiled horizon.

The painting is distinguished by the lightness of the watercolour technique and its harmonious palette. Warm ochre, brown, and terracotta tones of the architecture contrast with cooler shades of blue and grey-green. Fluid brushstrokes, subtle colour transitions, and more defined architectural details lend depth to the composition while capturing the atmosphere of historic Prague.

The work dates from 1952 and is executed in watercolour on paper, measuring 34 × 51 cm. It is signed in the lower left corner, framed, glazed, and presented with a passe-partout. Provenance: Galerie Platýz Auction, 18 February 2019.

Author

Jan Slavíček byl významný český malíř a člen malířské rodiny Slavíčků. Narodil se jako syn malíře Antonína Slavíčka a bratr režiséra a střihače Jiřího Slavíčka. Svou uměleckou dráhu zahájil studiem na Akademii výtvarných umění, kde byl žákem významných umělců, včetně profesora Jana Preislera, Vratislava Nehleby, Maxe Švabinského a Otakara Nejedlého v letech 1916–1925.

Od roku 1922 byl aktivním členem SVU Mánes a prošel řadou studijních cest po Evropě, kde ho inspirovaly různé krajiny a kultury. V letech 1937–1970 žil v Hrzánském paláci na Hradčanech, odkud maloval pohledy na Prahu z okna svého ateliéru. Během své kariéry získal několik ocenění, včetně státní ceny Klementa Gottwalda v roce 1953 a titulu národního umělce v roce 1967.

Jan Slavíček byl známý svými realistickými zobrazeními krajin, zátiší a pražských pohledů. Jeho tvorba byla ovlivněna fauvismem, ale brzy si vypracoval vlastní malířský výraz. Z Orlických hor či kraje kolem Orlické Rybné čerpal inspiraci a zároveň pokračoval v umělecké stopě svého otce Antonína Slavíčka.

Jan Slavíček zemřel 5. dubna 1970 v Praze.
