Title pages printed in black. Solid full-leather binding (both volumes bound together) with clasps (1 missing). Published by Johann Herman von Gelder in Munich in 1673. Binding slightly loose at the beginning and end of the book, worn on the outside, spine torn at the bottom, text block intact, leaves damaged by moisture and in places also by woodworm. Condition consistent with age. The first two volumes (of a total of four) of the monumental Baroque encyclopaedic work by the Bavarian Jesuit and theologian Wilhelm Gumppenberg. The German translation of his expanded Latin treatise Atlas Marianus (published in Latin in 1672) was made by his fellow Jesuit Maximilian Wartenberg. The book catalogues and describes in detail the history, origin and miracles of a total of 1,200 miraculous images and statues of Mary (Gnadenbilder) from across the Christian world of the time.
