This copy bears no. 91. Only a few slightly creased or frayed corners and edges. François Villon – French poet, real name François de Montcorbier or François des Loges. He took the name Villon from the Parisian chaplain Guillaume de Villon, who took him in and sent him to study at the Sorbonne in Paris. In 1449 he obtained the degree of bachelor and in 1452 that of master. He chose, however, a bohemian way of life. He became involved in various rebellious societies, above all the anti-establishment student society La Coquille. He was convicted several times for his activities, even sentenced to death for the murder of a priest. In the end, however, he was merely banished from Paris, and from then on nothing more is known of him. He wrote verse under the pseudonym Vaillant. He wrote in the form later named the Villon ballad after him. It consists of four stanzas, the first three of 7 to 12 lines and the last usually of 5 lines. Karel Svolinský – Czech graphic artist, painter and illustrator, born at Svatý Kopeček near Olomouc. He trained as a wood-carver and then graduated from the School of Applied Arts in Prague. From the mid-1920s he exhibited both at home and abroad. In 1928 and 1937 he took part in the Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques in Paris, where his work was awarded a gold medal and the Grand Prix. In the 1950s he represented Czechoslovakia at the Venice Biennale and at the World's Fair in Brussels. A series of solo exhibitions and international shows followed, especially in the field of book graphics and illustration. From 1945 to 1970 he was a professor at the College of Applied Arts in Prague.
